Here’s what you’ll need to get started on the blanket stitch:
- Fabric (I’ll be using felt)
- A needle
- Thread
- Pins
- Scissors
The first step we will do is to pin together our fabrics. I have used acrylic felt for this demonstration but you can use the fabric of your choice. With you needle and thread in hand (I have used orange thread so you can see it clearly) come up from in between your fabrics. This will mean that your knot on the end of thread will be concealed between the two layers.
Pull your thread all the way through and bring your needle to the back of the fabric and come up about 0.5cm away from your last stitch.
Now to create the blanket stitch, move the thread so it is underneath the needle and when the needle is pulled through the fabric, bring the thread through all the way. This will create the line that will go all the way around your shape.
Continue the same stitch pattern around the edge of your shape and it will create a very neat finish and will help to stop fraying. Once you have stitched all the way around, you can knot off the thread and tuck the end in the middle between the two layers to conceal it.
And you’re done! I hope you find this tutorial helpful and good luck on creating your own! If you have a go don’t forget to share your makes with us on Instagram @aboxofbuttons or on Twitter @aBoxofButtons! See you next time!
Your blanket stitch is beautifully neat. It’s much better than mine, whihc is very messy.
