Want to keep your pen close to your diary? You now can with this easy DIY pen holder!
What you’ll need to get started:
Sewing machine (Don’t worry if you don’t have one, this project can be sewn by hand!)
A piece of A4 paper
Our first step in to create the template, draw a large rectangle with the measurements of 23cm x 5cm. We will also need a rectangle measuring 12cm x 5cm.The rectangle sizing does depend on the pen you have chosen but I have made a standard sized template so most pens will fit. Also I have included a seam allowance and have drawn them onto my templates just so you can see.
Now that we have our templates we can pin them to our fabric and cut them out using our fabric shears. We need two of the large rectangle and just one small rectangle.
At this stage measure 17cm of elastic and cut it to that length. This will stretch around the back of the journal front cover to secure the pen holder to the book.
Take your two large rectangles and position your elastic down the middle of one, making sure the end of the elastic is right up against the end of the fabric.
Now take the other large rectangle and lay it over the top. Make sure the patterned side of the fabric is facing down and place a few pins around the edges.
Using your sewing machine, stitch down both of the long sides and across the end with the elastic in. Make sure to keep one of the ends open because we need to turn our fabric through.
Now that our fabric is turned through we need to stitch up the end and insert the other end of the elastic into the opening. Fold the raw edges inwards and pop a couple of pins in to keep it all in place.
Next, fold 1cm in on all of the edges on the small rectangle and stitch along the top of one of the small edges with a running stitch.
Pin the small rectangle onto the bigger one around the edges and take it to the sewing machine.
Stitch all the way around the edges with a running stitch, make sure you keep the elastic out of the way when stitching though!
And voila! A handy little pen holder for your journal. Great if you’re out and about!
