Have a plain, boring mug? Want to make it look more exciting and cool? Or need a quick DIY gift for someone’s birthday? Try making this easy and fun marbled mug!

What you’ll need:

  • A plain white mug
  • A disposable bowl
  • Nail varnish (I used two different colours)
  • A medium sized jug of room temperature water
  • Cocktail stick
  • Paper towel

Let’s get started!

To begin, make sure the mug that you’re going to use is squeaky clean!

Pour some of the water into your disposable bowl so that it is ¾ full, so when you dip the bottom of the mug into the water, it won’t overflow!

Now we’ll have to work fast otherwise the nail varnish will set! Drop some nail varnish onto the surface of the water and use your cocktail stick to swirl it around (this step is only necessary if like me, you used two different nail varnishes!).

Dip the bottom half of your mug straight down into the water. Hold it there for a few seconds so the nail varnish sticks to the sides.

Gently and carefully pull the mug out of the water and set aside on some paper towel to dry. I left mine to dry for around 2-3 hours.

If you want to create more than one design, use your cocktail stick to gather all of the nail varnish out of the water and repeat the same steps again!

I’m not too sure about washing the mug, I think it’ll need a kind of sealant to keep the design on the mug but I’m using my mug for display purposes only!

I hope you’ve enjoyed this project! If you have a go don’t forget to share your makes with us on Instagram @aboxofbuttons or on Twitter @aBoxofButtons! See you next time!
